  Definition(s):

  • Massively multiplayer online game - (also called MMOG or simply MMO) is a video game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet, and feature at least one persistent world. They are, however, not necessarily games played on general purpose computers; most of the newer game consoles (Xbox 360, PSP, PS3, Wii, etc.) can access the internet, and thus can have MMO genre games. MMOGs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a grand scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world. They include a variety of gameplay types, representing many video game genres. Many MMOGs require players to invest large amounts of their time into the game. Most MMOGs require a monthly subscription fee, but some can be played for free. (Source: Wikipedia)
    • Second Life - Second Life (abbreviated as SL) is an Internet-based virtual world launched in 2003, developed by Linden Research, Inc (commonly referred to as Linden Lab), which came to international attention via mainstream news media in late 2006 and early 2007.[4][5] A downloadable client program called the Second Life Viewer enables its users, called "Residents", to interact with each other through motional avatars, providing an advanced level of a social network service combined with general aspects of a metaverse. Residents can explore, meet other Residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, have virtual sex, and create and trade items (virtual property) and services from one another. • Massively multiplayer online role-playing game -(MMORPG) is a genre of massively multiplayer online computer role-playing games (CRPGs) in which a large number of players interact with one another in a virtual world. The term MMORPG was coined by Richard Garriott, the creator of Ultima Online, the massive multiplayer online role-playing game credited with popularizing the genre in 1997.[1] As in all RPGs, players assume the role of a fictional character (most commonly in a fantasy world),[2] and take control over many of that character's actions.[3] MMORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player CRPGs by the number of players, and by the game's persistent world, usually hosted by the game's publisher, which continues to exist and evolve while the player is away from the game. MMORPGs are very popular throughout the world.[4] Worldwide revenues for MMORPGs exceeded half a billion dollars in 2005,[5] and Western revenues exceeded one billion USD in 2006.[6] (Source: Wikipedia)

cg: If you want a glimpse into the world of game addiction, check out this site WoW Detox.  I recently became involved because I've known quite a few people (myself included) who have been (or are) addicted.  It sounds funny, but it's not.  And here's a YouTube about being being Addicted to WoW.
