 Steve Notes:

  • I LOVE IM
  • This will be one of the ways I will be encouraging you to look for help
  • You already have some of the accts you'll need
  • Be Brief (shorter messages = better messages)
  • No Caps

  Some Quick Statistics**:

  •  75% of online teens IM
  •  42% of online adults IM
  •  50% of IMing teens (32% of all teens) IM every single day

  Definition(s):

  • Instant Messaging (often abbreviated simply to IM) offers real-time communication and allows easy collaboration, which might be considered more akin to genuine conversation than email's "letter" format. In contrast to e-mail, the parties know whether the peer is available. Most systems allow the user to set an online status or away message so peers are notified when the user is available, busy, or away from the computer. On the other hand, people are not forced to reply immediately to incoming messages. For this reason, some people consider communication via instant messaging to be less intrusive than communication via phone. However, some systems allow the sending of messages to people not currently logged on (offline messages), thus removing much of the difference between Instant Messaging and email. Suggestions

(Your area to make any suggestions as to how this is taught/what is taught)

sg

Students could add their screenname to their blog info, etc during the next few lessons.

Also, adding their SN in a signature in an email

ks

Most Skype recorder programs have an "answering machine" feature, so it could be used as a comment/suggestion line for a podcast. Powergramo, Pamela both have that feature.

Not sure where to put this but there is:

  1. a WEB2.0 Expo at the Javits Center form Sept 16-19th, see more at web2expo.com/ny  (use webny08bp1 and get $100 off the conference, there is also a full-time student discount).
  2. an article on "Enterprise Social Software Tecnology" in the newest issue (Sept 2008) of KM World Magazine.
sg - this is fine here, after next week, twitter will be a great place to make announcements
