Screenvideo/Screencasting
This stuff is VERY edgy :-)
Lecture/Coffee Talk:
Lecture(s)/Demo(s):
Steve Notes:
- Camtasia v6 released on Friday 11.7!!
- Almost none of the videos above were recorded specifically for this class
- Very few libraries presently doing this, but video and bandwidth have arrived...
- Keep it short, attention spans wander (think of yourself when watching my 15min lectures) and file sizes are big
- Practice not perfection

Library Example(s):
- Very few public examples, this has been mostly a tool for Distance Ed. Librarians and content is inside Course Shells
- Basic catalog searching/renew/etc. (created for SCILS 25th Anniversary presentation and reused again and again)
- Examples from Greg Notess' Libcasting Blog

Projects
- Jing
- download/install
- setup screencast.com account (xxscils598f08...)
- create a screencast on any educational topic you like (e.g. - catalog/db search, application software, etc.)
- 800x600 or 640x480 would be my recommended window sizes when you record
- give it a good title
- share it to screencast.com
- Blog Posts
- Comments on YouTube scils598f08 search
- when viewing the videos of your classmates, do you have a favorite? why? (ok to have more than one)
- Jing post
- create a blog post and in it add a link to your screencast that created with Jing (file will be on screencast.com)
- don't forget to add some lead-in text to explain what the screencast will be about
Suggestions:
Your area to make any suggestions as to how this is taught/what is taught)
(example) sg - suggestion goes here
ks-public library potential audience: homebound patrons (they're not all old!) and we have some that liked watching screencasts to be more independent with placing holds, etc.;
homeschooling parents: quick little tours of databases could be popular (haven't tried that one yet)
ks- just this week a patron contacted me because she hadn't gotten any emails about her books on hold. Turns out all of them have long waiting lists.
Sent her the link to the screencast on how to check her place in the queue. Later in the week, happened to meet her in person, and she thought that was great!
jg- I was going to add this example to the "example" section above, but I feel funny adding something up there (I know, I know, that's the point of a wiki, but I'm just not there yet!)
Anyway, my library has a wonderful new librarian (recent SCILS grad!) who is developing screencasts for our customers. The first one she created on how to access your library account can be seen here: "Accessing your library account"
