Wikis/Collaborative Documents/Presentations
- pbwiki2.0 = lack of common password/no js support (I'd stick with a pbwiki1.0)
- You REALLY depend on each other this week

Steve Notes:
- Wikipedia is not the only Wiki
- Wikis are my PowerPoint, my working/collection areas
- If you do anything, with anyone who is anywhere else - Wiki
- Some things to look for:
- hosted or server install
- wysiwyg or specialized code (wikistyle)
- feed/notification
- open or user access page
- history/revision/rollback
- URL & Branding
- Bye bye programs ON your computer
- Collaborating in "other" ways
- Collaboration/Community Building
Definition(s):
- Wiki Defined: A wiki is a collaborative website which can be directly edited by anyone with access to it. (source: Wikipedia)
- Google Docs Defined: Google Docs is a free, Web-based word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation application offered by Google. It allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real-time with other users. (Source: Wikipedia) (now does presentations as well)

Popular Programs/Services:
- wikis
- collaborative docs/tools
Library Example(s):
Resources/Other:
Homework/To Do:
Reading:
- Farkas. Wikis, Ch.5
- Anderson, C. Intro & Ch. 1-3
Watching:
Projects
- Blog Posts (tag/label blog posts scils598 and anything else you like)
- Look what we did...http://del.icio.us/tag/scils598f08
- I'm thinking of using this as a "Virtual Introduction" process in other classes...what do you think?
- Based on what you've read so far in Anderson:
- Is the library world as a whole set to benefit from the Long Tail?
- How well do you think something like Google docs, spresent, etc. would work with an online (or oncampus) group of students
- Would it make project creation easier? faster?
- In GENERAL (no names please), do you think this type of document will be welcomed, accepted, etc. by online/on-campus faculty? why/why not?
- Create an account on one of: wikispaces | wetpaint | wikidot
- (Try a service you aren't already using)
- Create a 1-2 paragraph (or equivalent) post comparing it to pbwiki
- Come and voicethread with me....
- Google Doc/Wiki group project (I'm open to other ideas as long as there is a wiki element)
- You're going to create a "user guide" via a Google Doc, and then use a wiki to share the document and your group with the world
- Groups for the following projects (1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, 16-18, 19-21)
- Note: this isn't perfectly seamless, but it's a way to get you to use both tools :-) (and since there's a revision history I can see who did the work)
- Plan/Outline what you're going to do (via IM, email, your choice)
- Step #1 - Google Docs
- With your group create a quick 1-2pg "how to" for a database which includes screen captures (e.g. search, renew, feature) on GoogleDocs (remember you already have a Google acct)
- One person start a document and Save
- "Share" with other members of group (invite me as viewer - librarysteve@yahoo.com)
- When done, Export document as Word or .pdf so you can include it on your project wiki
- Step #2 - pbwiki
- Figure out a group wiki address and common password (don't use one person's xxscils598 create something different)
- One person set up the wiki and let the others know when it's set up
- Set up structure of wiki (main page, bio pages, database "how to" page, more if you want...)
- Front Page w/greeting, Links to short bio pages of members, Link to database "how to"
- Bio page should contain picture/avatar, and short paragraph description (can be fabricated/copied)
- Text/Link to database "how to",
- Add a "link" to the file you created (you'll need to upload the file in pbwiki)
- Below that copy/paste the content from your document (be prepared to tweak)
- Each member of group - Add URL of wiki to your russl profiles
